In the work of a trade or profession, you will meet new words that you must be able to spell. Even though they may look difficult, there is an easy way to get the best of them. Look at the beginning of the word. Look for a prefix and note the point at which the prefix ends and stem begins: re·commend. Note especially any prefix that ends with the same letter that starts the stem:ac·commodate, dis·sension, cor·roborate.
Listen for an unaccented vowel sound as in ram·i·fy. Make note of the vowel letter that stands for this sound. Watch for doubled letters. Sometimes, as in accommodate, there are two doubles. If only one consonantis doubled, make sure which one it is: collate. Watch for unpronounced consonants as well. Take note of any vowel digraphs such as ea, ei, ie, ai, or ou. Tie the digraph to its sound. Study the ending. Look for doubled consonants: committed, repellent. If there is a suffix, note especially the vowel letter as in able and ible, er and or, and ant and ent. Concentrate on the spelling briefly. Try to fix it in your memory. But if you forget, don‘t guess! Look it up.
