Step 1 Revision
1 Check the homework exercises.
2 Play Spot the mistake with your class. Books shut. Say to the Ss: I‘m going to read out part of the text from Lesson 15. But there are a few mistakes. Listen carefully. If you hear a mistake, put up your hand and correct me. Cook then sailed north to Australia. Cook was the first person to map the south coast. They landed in a horrible bay that Cook named Zoology Bay because of the beautiful animals that they found there. Later this was to become the place of the first French settlements in Australia. They found Australia to be a boring country where the soil was white, bears climbed ladders, birds ran but didn’t fly and large animals jumped about on four legs carrying their young on their heads.
Step 2 Preparation for listening
SB Page 12, Part 1. Wb Listening, Unit 4. Tell the Ss We ‘re going to listen to a talk about life on one of Captain Cook’s boats. Then read the introduction aloud and read through the question in Ex. 1 and make sure the Ss understand what to do.
Step 3 Listening
Listening Cassette Unit 2. Do each exercise in turn. Play the tape, then let Ss discuss their answers in pairs. Play the tape again if necessary, then check the answers with the whole class.
Listening Text
Travels with Captain Cook
In this radio programme about the travels of Captain Cook, the speaker gives some information about life on the ship "Endeavour". PARTI
Some of the sailors on the ship had special jobs. The captain of the boat had a lot of power. He could order sailors to be kept in chains or beaten if they did not obey his orders. The master‘s job was to set the course for the ship by the sun and the stars. There was a doctor on board who treated the men’s illnesses and wounds. The gunner looked after the guns and the iron balls for the guns. A woodworker stopped any holes in the sides of the ship and carried out any necessary repairs to the woodwork. The sailmaker repaired sails and made new .sails when necessary. Another sailor was in charge of the ship‘s stores and gave the sailors their orders. The cook did the cooking.
PART 2
Life on a ship like the Endeavour was very hard. Many of the sailors were men who had stolen or killed. It was the custom in those days to give them the choice of going to sea or going to prison. Other young sailors were boys whose parents had died. In all, the Endeavour had 39 able seamen aged between 16 and 45 years of age. There were no toilets on the ship and very little water to wash in. Soap was not used until 1810 and even then the men had to pay for it. In Captain Cook’s day, each man was paid less than one pound per month.
PART 3
When the Endeavour set sail on its journey around the world, it was loaded with stores as follows:
9,600 kg of bread
4,000 kg of wheat flour
4,000 pieces of beef
6,000 pieces of pork
3,500 kg of cabbage
5,400 litres of beer
Answers:

Step 4 Checkpoint
Go through Checkpoint 4. Revise the -ing Form. Practise the useful expressions and deal with any language points that you or the Ss wish to raise.
Step 5 Test
Give the Ss the following test on the -ing forms. Use suitable verbs in the correct form to complete these sentences.
imagine admit celebrate consider delay dislike enjoy escape finish forgive
1 He ... stealing the necklace the day before and said he was sorry.
2 I... flying, so I usually take the train instead.
3 We have so little money that I think we should ... paying these bills.

10 I’ll... you for being late, but don‘t do it again.
Answers:
1 admitted 2 dislike 3 delay 4 escaped 5 celebrated 6 imagine 7 enjoy 8 consider 9 finished 10 forgive
Step 6 Writing
SB Page 12, Part 2. This writing exercise, designed to practise tenses, needs careful preparation. Read the passage aloud to the Ss first to make sure that they read it through before attempting to do this exercise. Ask the Ss a few check questions: Where are the ships now? How long have they been there? Where is the expedition going tomorrow? What about the bad weather and the ic-e — is that present or past? What about sailing south to these islands — is that present, past or future? Let the students work through this exercise in pairs, then go over the answers with the whole class. It is good consolidation to get students to write out the complete text for homework. Answers:
have been repairing / have repaired, started, hoped, would lead, has discovered, exists, was, was getting, came, were, had, would; have already run, have, have decided, are going, hope, shall reach; will be, have already decided, return, will/shall make, tries, shall insist, are
Notes:
1 The northwest passage was a channel of water that early explorers believed must exist. It would lead from the north of the Pacific Ocean to the north of the Atlantic Ocean, to the north of Russia. Of course, there is water here, but it is frozen for most of the year at part of the Arctic Ocean.
2 Captain Cook was killed in a fight with natives in Hawaii on February 14th, 1779.
Step 7 Writing
SB Page 12, Part 3. Spend some time preparing this writing task in class. Here is one possible procedure:
1 Read out the instructions to the class.
2 Read aloud a few sentences of a sample version so that Ss can see how to combine the ideas. I have just arrived in China. The markets are very busy and the streets are full of people. Travelling around the town is very easy. I have borrowed a bicycle from a friend. Luckily I love cycling.
3 Put students in groups of four. Let them speak in Chinese about the things which they will include in their letter. In this way they will end up with lots of ideas.
4 Get them to make a plan of their letter.
5 If the writing is done in class, get each group to write three sentences and then bring them to you for checking.
You may also set the writing for homework.
6 After correcting, get each student to write out a final draft of the letter.
Step 8 Workbook
Wb Lesson 8, Exx. 1-3.
Ex. 1 is a good exercise for consolidation. Ss must read the texts again in order to do the task. Make sure every S makes an effort. Get some of them to read aloud the sentences and finally the whole passage again.
Before doing Ex. 2, revise the new words in this unit.
Do the exercise in pairs first. Then check the answers with the whole class. Get Ss to translate the sentences into Chinese.
If it is possible, take up Ex. 3. Carry out the activity in pairs. Then call out some pairs to perform in front of the class.
Homework
Finish off the Workbook exercises. Finish writing the letter.
