Step 1 Revision
Check the homework exercises, especially Wb Lesson 5, Ex. 3.
Revise the dialogues in SB Lesson 5. If necessary, give the Ss more drilling in the asking for permission phrases in SB Lesson 5, Part 2.
Step 2 Preparation for reading
Brainstorm smoking. Draw a No smoking sign and ask What does this mean? Where can you find this sign? Why is smoking not allowed? Who smoke more cigarettes in China: men or women? Make a note of the Ss‘ answers on the Bb. Teach some key vocabulary, such as a packet of cigarettes, tobacco and habit at this stage.
SB Page 8, Part 1. Talk about the picture in the usual way. Ask What can you see in the picture? (Mother, her child, and a cigarette.) What does the picture mean? (It means that smoking is bad for the health of your family.) Translate the Chinese into English. (For the health of your family ....) Explain that the slogan indicates "YOU MUST STOP SMOKING!" Then read through the questions at the top of the page. Let the Ss read the passage quickly to find the answers. (Both sentences are true.)
Step 3 Reading
Wb Lesson 6, Ex. 1. Read through the exercise with the Ss and make sure they know what to do. Then let them read the passage carefully and note the answers. Discuss the answers with the whole class and deal with any language points that arise.
Notes:
a tobacco: the name of the plant that is made into cigarettes
b illnesses caused by smoking tobacco: These include heart and lung diseases.
c bedclothes = sheets, blankets, cover, etc, put on a bed (not the clothes a person wears in bed)
d The bedclothes catch fire: The Present Tense is used because the writer is describing a habitual action.
e This is because: this refers to the previous sentence. The cause is contained in the sentence This is .... The result is contained in the sentence Every year,....
f die from the habit = die as a result of their smoking habit. Note the preposition die of an illness, die from smoking.
g one smoker in four = 25% of smokers
h sales of cigarettes have been reduced: This is because there have been several education campaigns about the dangers of smoking.
i The problem is that: This phrase introduces the problem.
j are dying each day: Present Continuous.
Present Indefinite would also be possible. The Present Continuous is often used in this type of sentence where the negative content of the sentence is emphasized.
k remain in business = continue to make money
Step 4 Reading aloud
For practice, get the Ss to read the last paragraph aloud. Play Speech Cassette Lesson 6, or read the paragraph yourself as a model. Pay attention to the correct reading of the numbers.
Step 5 Writing
SB Page 9, Part 2. This exercise contains a reading passage with some words missing. The first letter of each missing word is given. The Ss are required to put in the missing words according to the context. Teach the new words ban, public and make sure the Ss read the whole passage carefully before they do the exercise individually. Then check the answers with the whole class. After that, encourage the Ss to discuss the three questions in pairs.

Step 6 Practice
Revise the Attributive Clause used for identifying an object/person: say I’m looking for my pen. The pen I‘m looking/or is red. I’ve lost my book. The book I‘ve lost is quite heavy. Write these sentences on the Bb.
The pen I’m looking for is red.
The book I‘ve lost is quite heavy.
Point out that I’m looking for/I‘ve lost identify the noun (pen/book). When the noun is the object of the Attributive Clause, we can omit which/that/who, etc.
SB Page 9, Part 3. Go through the examples with the whole class. Remind the Ss that whom is only used in formal writing. Do the first two or three sentences orally with the whole class, then let the Ss work alone or in pairs.
Check the answers with the whole class.
Answers:
1 The packet of cigarettes (which/that) my uncle bought cost 5.20 yuan.
2 The doctor told David, who saw her at the hospital, to stop smoking.
(Or: The doctor (who/whom) David saw at the hospital told him to stop smoking.)
3 One habit (which/that) he can’t give up is smoking.
4 People who want to smoke have to smoke outside.
5 The government receives lots of money from sales of tobacco (which/that) cigarettes are made of.
6 People who smoke too much may not live long.
Step 7 Discussion
SB Page 9, Part 4. Let the Ss read the text again and discuss the questions in groups. Write the reasons on the Bb. At the end ask some groups to report their discussion before the class.
Step 8 Workbook
WbLesson6,Exx.2-4.
Ask the Ss to read through Ex. 2 before they tell you which is the best answer (4).
Read the article again before starting to do Ex. 3. Discuss the answers in pairs. Then check the answers with the whole class.
Translate the numbers in Ex. 4 into English. Make sure the Ss know how to say them correctly.
Step 9 ConsolidationRevise the contents of the passage. Ask some focus questions, such as:
1 How many people smoke in China / Britain?
2 Why does smoking cost the government a lot of money?
3 What must tobacco companies do to remain in business? etc.
Homework
Complete the Workbook exercises.
Read the passage once more.
