THE PAST It's nearly the end of the twentieth century, one of the most glories in the human history. Looking back upon the dawn of the New Age, the future of the Europeans, Americans, and Japanese indeed looked most promising, but what did our fellow, country men have to look forward to? What they had was nothing but starvation, disasters, wars, invaders from abroad, and drugs from the dirty Europeans and the Americans. Once, China was the richest and most prosperous country in the world. We, the Chinese were making poems while the Euro-peans were still at the age of eating raw flesh, but what had been glorious had all been wiped out by the humiliation we had from both ourselves and foreigners after the wars between England and China and the Jiawu-war with Japan, China for once seemed defenseless. The Chinese people were not fighting back, but obeying like slaves. That is perhaps why the parks in a foreigners' living area were decorated with big signs saying: "Dogs and Chinese are not allowed…" 5000 years of Chinese culture luckily survived in the hearts of some of the revolutionaries spread all over China. These great heroes took up the tedious task of rebuilding the suffering coun-try. Sun Zhongshan raised the big flag for freedom and the great revolution began. While the revloutionaries were fighting against the greedy warlords in China and their even greedier foreign boss-es behind the scenes, there were also people like Lu Xun trying to save the soul of the Chinese. More and more Chinese woke up from their paralysis of the evil and gathered for the struggle for freedom. But sadly, the great revolution failed and China fell into darkness again. Many young men full of aspiration tried to copy the decadent western ways of making the country rich and strong, but they all failed. It seemed as if capitalism was not fit for China. Then came the communists and Mao Zhedong started a new era for the Chi-nese people. China is not a sleeping giant anymore,it has waken up. NOW Since the new China has been established, a lot of changes has gone through the country, some bad like the cultural revolu-tion, the big leap, some good like the opening up of China. Econo-my is boosting in the country, high buildings being constructed and TVs and VCDs entering almost every Chinese home. Now the life of the Chinese has become much better but things do not always go on well enough. Last year, we had the biggest flood for many years. Lots of places and farmland were drowned or flood-ed, and lots of lives were lost. But with the efforts from all across the country, the Chinese people survived this flood, which has again made the hearts of the people come closer than it has been for many years. There is an old Chinese saying: "One chopstick is easy to break, but a bunch of chopsticks is very strong"! With the belief that we are all united, we stand firm before the economic crisis in Asia. Last year we had lots of achievements, but we are still hoping for a better future. THE FUTURE What once has been torn away from its mother── Hong Kong has come back to its mother and Macao is coming back at the end of the year. Our country is almost complete but for Tai-wan. I see in the future that one day Taiwan will join its mother with tears on its face for being away from home for so long, and separated families reunite and get together for a big Chinese feast. All the happy faces and tears of joy deeply move my heart as I see it and I see that "Made in China "is no longer a sign of poor but high quality. Foreigners will enjoy Chinese products in-stead of those from their own countries. China, once again will be the richest and strongest country in the world. I am really deter-mined to do everything I can to realize this dream of both mine and the nation'" 评语: Wu Congyang, a 19-year-old high school student, is in his beautiful statement presenting his view on his motherland by de-scribing its past, present and future. In his brief coverage we can definitely see the strong desire, or perhaps "aspiration" as Congyang himself writes, that China's modern youth feel for their beloved country, which inevitable will raise above other nations in the future, more prosperous and promising than ever. His inspir-ing as well as encouraging composition is so vivid and full of meaning that I can't help admiring it and it is indeed a true plea-sure to read it over and over again and thus be able to share the writer's positive spirit. Being the author's English teacher, I must admit that I really envy his fluency in English and his extraordi-nary command of its vocabulary, something that he has gained only after many years of hard studies. There is no doubt whatso-ever that Wu Congyang's English is way above the regular level of other students in his age. I am convinced that this well-de-served chance that he has been given will help him further in his studies and his constant ambition to achieve even better results.
