Step 1 Revision
Check the homework exercises. Revise the contents of the passage in SB Lesson 6. See if the Ss can tell you about the passage with their books closed!
Step 2 Preparation for reading
SB Lesson 7, Part 1. Ask the Ss Why do people smoke? Teach the word drug using Chinese. Ask What other drugs do you know? Ask the Ss to read the passage quickly to find the answer to this question What is the name of the drug in cigarettes? (Nicotine.)
Step 3 Reading
Ask the Ss Why can‘t people stop smoking? Let the Ss read the passage carefully to find the answer (Nicotine is a drug that gets one into the habit of smoking). Go through the passage with the Ss and discuss the information in it. Check to see if the Ss understand it. Deal with any language points.
Notes:
a have tried more than once to give it up. = have tried several times to give up smoking
b The problem with tobacco: Note the use of with in this structure.
c that gets one into the habit of smoking. = that causes people to become trapped in the habitual action of smoking
d smokers who are used to nicotine = who are habitual users of nicotine
e go without = don’t take
f for an hour or two = for a few hours
g calling for: an emphatic way of saying needs
h One thing that will stop them feeling bad = Nicotine will stop these people feeling ill.
Step 4 Discussion
SB Page 10, Part 2. Teach the new word cancer and explain (in Chinese if necessary) that cancer is a very common cause of death among smokers. (Lung cancer is the most common form, but smokers may get cancer of the throat, mouth or other parts of body, too.) Divide the class into groups of four. Go through Questions 1-4 explaining what they have to do for each question. Then let the groups discuss these questions. Ask them for their answers/opinions at the end of this stage. Answers: 1A>B>C 4 all true Then read through Questions 5-7. Explain that nonsmoking areas are areas where smoking is not allowed. Let the groups discuss these questions. Ask them for their answers / opinions at the end of this stage.
Step 5 Language study
SB Page 11, Part 3. Write the two example sentences on the Bb and revise the use of Noun Clauses as the Object and Predicative. Point out that in the Object Clause that is optional, but in the Predicative Clause that is necessary and cannot be omitted.
Step 6 Practice
SB Page 11, Part 4. This exercise helps the Ss to grasp the use of Noun Clauses as Object and Predicative. Give one or two examples to make sure the Ss know how to do the exercise before they work in pairs, e. g.. Many smokers know (that) smoking tobacco causes illnesses. That is because the tobacco companies want to remain in business. Tell the Ss that they may make as many sentences as possible. At the end of this activity ask some pairs to act out before the class.
Step 7 Practice
SB Page 11, Part 5. The aim of mis‘ exercise is help the Ss to understand the difference between the two phrases be used to and used to. Be used to means to be accustomed to, used to is used for expressing the habits or states that existed in the past and have now ceased. First let the Ss work alone. Then check the answers with the whole class. Answers:

Step 8 Workbook
Wb Lesson 7, Exx. 1-3.
Ex. 1 helps consolidate what is taught in Lessons 6 and 7. While getting the Ss to do it in pairs, ask one of them to write down the answers to the first two questions on the Bb. Then check the answers with the whole class. Ex. 2 should be done in pairs first, then in class. After finishing Ex. 3, translate the sentences into Chinese.
Homework
Finish the Workbook exercises.
Read the second part of the passage in this lesson again for a dictation.
Revise the contents of this unit.
