奥运高中英语演讲稿
The Olympic Games are celebrated around the world as a big sports meeting with great significance of maintaining peace, enhancing friendship and promoting civilization. As one of the most influential countries in the world today, China won the right to host the 29th Olympic Summer Games in 2008. But how much do you know about Beijing Olympic games ? That’s what I want to say.
1. The relationship between PRC & Olympic .
After the foundation of the People's Republic and the flight of the government of the Republic of China under Jiang Kaishek to Taiwan both Chinese states wanted to take part in the Olympic Games as the official representative of China. In 1952 the PRC sent a delegation of 40 to the Games in Helsinki while no Taiwanese athlete participated in the Games to protest against the invitation of the PRC.
In 1956 the first severe boycott happened in the history of the Games. While some Western states like Spain, the Netherlands or Switzerland rejected a participation because of the invasion of the USSR in Hungary and Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt did not take part due to the Suez crisis, the PRC boycotted the Games on account of the presence of Taiwanese athletes and the recognition of the National Olympic Committee of Taiwan by the IOC.
In 1958 the PRC interrupted the relations with the IOC because Taiwan was seen as a part of China and from the PRC's point of view the recognition of two Olympic Committees for one country was a violation of the Olympic Charter. China returned to the Games not until the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid (美国纽约州普莱西德湖) of 1980. In the previous year during the IOC meeting in Nagoja the IOC had acknowledged the Olympic Committee representing the PRC. Since then Taiwan competes in the Olympics using the name "Chinese Taipei". In the PRC this was considered a success of Deng Xiaoping's policy "One state, two systems".
2.Bids.
①. China's application for the Olympic Games in 2000
Do you know when China organized the first great international sports event? In 1990, the PRC hosted the 11th Asia Games in Beijing. These Asia Games were considered a dress rehearsal for a possible application to become the host city of the Games in 2000. The application was decided in April 1991 and the "2000 Olympic Games Bidding Committee" was founded.
Disappointedly, the election was lost to Sydney with only two votes. Reputedly the Australian John Coates bribed the IOC memberson the eve of the election during dinner offering them 35.000 dollars each masked as sport development aid. Despite that Chinese athletes successfully participated in the Games in Sydney in 2000 and won 3rd rank behind the USA and Russia.
8 years later, Beijing began its second bid.
② Beijing's bid for the Olympic Games in 2008
Ⅰ; Beijing’s choosing.
On 6th September in 1999 the "Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Bid Committee" (BOBICO) which was supposed to organize Beijing's application was founded.
Ⅱ; two steps.
The application for the Olympic Games in 2008 consisted of two steps. The first step was to answer a questionnaire. Only then the applying cities officially became Applicant Cities.
The second step was to accept Evaluation Commission’s inspections. Because of the bribery scandal, members of the IOC were no longer allowed to travel to the Candidate Cities.
Ⅲ; introduction and assessment.
After 10 minutes’ introduction to the IOC Executive Committee, Beijing entered its application forms. The first visit of the Commission was to Beijing from 21st February till 24th February. On 15th May the Evaluation Commission entered the report on the Candidate Cities, which testified to Beijing's high quality application:
"It is the Commission's belief that a Beijing Games would leave a unique legacy to China and to sport and the Commission is confident that Beijing could organize excellent Games."
Ⅳ; The result of the election.
The last chance for the Candidate Cities to present their application was a one- hour lecture during the plenary assembly of the IOC in Moscow on 13th July 2001.
The result of the vote was notified by IOC president Samaranch at 6 p.m. Moscow time. Beijing already came out on top against its competitors surprisingly clear during the second ballot.
3. significance
China’s final success not only have the significance for sharing the Olympic spirit, celebrating humanity and expanding exchanges between the East and the West, but also help provide a good opportunity of showing the current state of economic, cultural, social and political development in China in a comprehensive way.
Questions.
♂Do you think the application for the Olympic Games is connected to a country’s economy and politics ? Why?
♂What effect do you think the Olympic Games will have to the host countries ?
♂How many Olympic heroes in the Chinese history do you know ?
