Step 1 Revision
1 Check the homework exercises.
2 Ask a few quick questions on the passage in Lesson 3.
Name the two minerals which Madame Curie discovered. (Radium and polonium.) Which disease is sometimes cured by radium? How many Nobel Prizes did Madame Curie win ? How did Pierre Curie die? Which job did Madame Curie get after Pierre‘s death? Who gave her a gram of radium for her future work? Where were the two Radium Institutes set up ? How old was Madame Curie when she died?
Step 2 Preparation for listening
SB Page 6, Part 1. Wb Listening, Unit 1. Tell the Ss We’re going to listen to a radio interview with Madame Curie. Then read the introduction aloud and read through the task in Ex. 1 and make sure the Ss understand what to do.
Step 3 Listening
Listening Cassette Unit 1. Do each exercise in turn. Play the tape, then let Ss discuss their answers in pairs. Play the tape again if necessary, then check the answers with the whole class.
Listening Text
Madame Curie
In this radio interview recorded on her 60th birthday, Marie Curie talks about her life.
(MC: Marie Curie; J: Journalist)
J: As well as your scientific discoveries, what in your life has given you particular pleasure?
MC: I am very pleased that the discovery of
radium has helped doctors in the treatment of cancer. I had no idea that this might be one of the results of doing research on radioactive matter. Another thing that I am pleased with is the development of X-rays. I was able to see how useful this was in my war work during the First World War. In my opinion, the use of X-rays is one of the most important medical developments this century.
J: How has your life been up till now?
MC: Good, hard, exciting, and sad.
J: Could you say a little more about that?
MC: Yes. My early family life in Poland was good. But I regret that I had to leave my country and my family behind in order to study in France.
J: What else was hard?
MC: That‘s easy to answer. Studying in Paris was hard. For months on end I was cold and hungry. It was very hard in the early days of my research too. The work of separating radium seemed to go on and on.
J: Has there been much sadness in your life?
MC: Yes. The death of my husband made me feel very sad. And I was greatly shocked at the damage and loss of life in the First World War.
J: What do you consider to be your greatest victory?
MC: Curiously it was not the discovery of radium. I think it was being made Professor of Physics at the University of Paris and being given two Nobel Prizes. You see, when I was young, I was not able to go to university in my country because people thought it was not suitable for women to study. But now I think I have proved that women should be allowed to study whatever they like and are able to become university professors.
8 She asked me to help her in her research,... I was happy to do.
9 There was only one speech ... I found disappointing.
10 The thing ... I found shocking was that he died
so young. Answers:

Answers:
Ex. 1: Leaving Poland;
Studying in Paris;
Separating radium;
Her work in the First World War;
Winning two Nobel Prizes Ex.2: (See the text.) Ex.3:
1 leaving Poland, studying, the early days of her research, separating radium
2 the death of her husband, the damage and loss of life in the First World War
3 the discovery of radium has helped doctors in the treatment of cancer; the development of X-rays
4 being made Professor of Physics at the University of Paris and being given two Nobel Prizes
Step 4 Checkpoint
Go through Checkpoint 1. Revise attributive clauses if necessary. Practise the useful expressions and deal with any language points that you or the Ss wish to raise.
Step 5 Test
Dictate the following sentences to the class and get them to fill in the missing words. One extra word must be added to each sentence. Get the Ss to provide their own punctuation marks if they can, and warn them to be careful with commas.
1 I went to Mary’s graduation party,... I knew a lot of people.
2 Pierre,... was teaching at the School of Physics and Industrial Chemistry, was very bright.
3 Marie‘s sister, with ... I had shared a flat in Poland, was a musician.
4 I went back to my country,... I devoted several years to scientific research.
5 We decided to give the prize to Madame Curie, ... research we admired greatly.
6 I sent a letter to Dr Black,... had treated me for my heart disease the year before.
7 The professor was Madame Curie, in honour of ... the new institute was named.
Step 6 Word study
SB Page 6, Part 2. Get the Ss to do this exercise
individually, then check the answers.
Answers:
1 admire 2 curing 3 devotes 4 bench 5 willing 6 shocked 7 disappointed 8 honour 9 succeeded 10 institute 11 effect 12 courage
Step 7 Writing
SB Page 6, Part 3. Make sure that Ss have completed the notes on the life and work of Madame Curie before they begin this task. Tell them that they are going to write their paragraphs in the same style as the two texts in this unit. Get them to write their paragraphs individually, then exchange them with their partners for comment and correction. Get them to write out the corrected and improved version for homework.
Step8 Workbook
Wb Lesson 4, Exx. 1-4.
Before starting to do Ex. 1, ask Ss to give all the phrases with go and give and write them down on the Bb. Make sure they know the meanings. After Ss complete the sentences, they should put them into Chinese.
Revise the new words in the unit. Then let the Ss have some time to work out the answers for Ex.2 by themselves. Finally check the answers and have the Ss translate them.
Ex. 3 is a passage for translation. Ask Ss to write a draft first. Then go over the texts about Madame Curie again and correct the mistakes. Check their translation in class by asking some of them to read their version aloud or write it down on the Bb.
If time permits, get Ss to talk about famous scientists in class. Ask them to do Ex. 4 as written homework.
Homework
Finish off the Workbook exercises. Write out the paragraph about Madame Curie.
