1 Revise the dialogue in Lesson 5, paying special attention to intonation.
2 Check the homework exercises. Check the vocabulary in Part 1 by asking comprehension questions.
Step 2 Presentation
SB Page 8, Part 2. Get Ss to talk about the picture and describe what they can see. Write these questions on the Bb: 1) In which war did Cook play an important part? 2) Why did Cook go on his journey to the Pacific? Then say Read the passage and then answer these questions in pairs. Allow the Ss enough time to read the text and find the answers. Put them in pairs, get them to discuss their answers, then collect the answers from the class. (1 Seven Years War, and the Battle of Quebec in Canada; 2 To see Venus passing between the earth and the sun, and to look for a new continent in the Indian/Pacific Ocean.)
Step 3 Reading
Wb Lesson 6, Ex. 1. Go through the exercise and make sure the Ss know what to do. Let them read the whole passage carefully and answer the questions, working in pairs or small groups. Check the answers with the whole class. This is a good time to deal with any language problems. See if the Ss can guess the meaning of purpose, in charge of, set out, unusually.
Notes:
a landowner = a rich person who owns a lot of land
b took an interest in: A set phrase = became interested in ...
c which was used: past indefinite passive
d The Seven Years War: The war lasted from 1756 to 1763 and was a worldwide conflict fought in Europe, North America and India between France, Austria, Russia, Saxony, Sweden.and (after 1762) Spain, on one side, and Great Britain, Prussia and Hanover on the other. Two main issues were involved: French and English colonial rivalries in North America and India, and the struggle for supremacy in Europe of Maria Theresa of Austria and Frederick II of Prussia. The war confirmed Prussia‘s new rank as a leading European power and made Britain the world’s chief colonial power. France lost most of its overseas possessions.
e break out: A set expression for certain nouns only, meaning to start. Examples: Afire / War/ Fighting broke out.
f was being fought: past continuous passive
g was defending = was fighting to protect
h the city of Quebec: The city was founded in 1608, and is today the capital of Quebec Province. In 1983 it had a population of about 163,800. The population is largely French-speaking and the city is today a focus of French Canadian nationalism.
i which stood high on a rock above the St. Lawrence River = which was on a high rock overlooking the St. Lawrence River. The cliff is 90 metres high.
j St. Lawrence River: The river, 1197 kilometres long, flows from Lake Ontario to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is closed by ice from mid-December to mid-April, but at other times of the year links the Great Lakes with the sea.
k chart all the dangerous rocks = to mark on a map the location of all the dangerous rocks
1 to mark a path for the warships to follow = to put markers or lights to show where the warships should pass
m take the enemy by surprise: a set expression meaning to catch or attack someone unprepared
n set up home = bought a house and moved into it with his wife
o he charted its coasts = he made a map (chart) of its coasts
p a very unusual event... in 1769. The word eclipse (partial or total) is used to describe the event when a planet or moon passes between the sun and the earth.
q merchant ship = a ship for trading, i.e. for carrying goods
r learnt his seamanship = learnt the skills of sailing at sea. Other common words ending in -ship: leadership, ownership, which describe the fact or the manner of doing something.
s It was just over 32 metres in length = It was just over 32 metres long. Other similar words ending in -th: breadth, width, depth.
t got sick: sailors used to get the disease scurvy (坏血病 ) which is caused by a lack of Vitamin C in the diet.
u set out for = started its journey in the direction of
Step 4 Reading aloud
Speech Cassette Lesson 14. Play the tape of the passage for the Ss to listen and follow. Play the tape of part of the passage once more; this time the Ss listen and repeat. Pay attention to stress and intonation, and to sentence stress in the longer sentences.
Step 5 Reference
SB Page 9, Part 3. Read the instruction and check that the Ss know what to do. Do the first two items orally with the whole class. Then let the Ss work through this exercise in pairs. Check the answers at the end. Answers:

Step 6 Note making
SB Page 9, Part 4. Get Ss to do this exercise individually, so that every S has to make an effort to re-read the text and extract the relevant information. If it is done in class, get Ss to check their notes afterwards in pairs. Alternatively, if you wish, you can set this exercise for homework. In that case, get Ss to check their notes in pairs at the beginning of the next lesson.
Notes:
Flour— for baking bread
Food stores: onions, salted meat, cheese, plain biscuits, beer
Cabbage in vinegar— to keep the men healthy
Live animals (pigs, sheep and chickens) — for eggs and fresh meat
Vinegar — for cleaning the ship
Step 7 Workbook
Wb Lesson 6, Exx. 2 and 3.
Ex. 2 helps consolidate some useful verbs. Let the Ss work individually. Then check the answers with the whole class. Get Ss to translate the sentences into Chinese.
Revise the new words and expressions in SB Lesson 14 before doing Ex. 3. Let Ss do this exercise by themselves and then check the answers with the whole class. Write down the answers on the Bb. Have the sentences translated into Chinese.
Step 8 Consolidation
Ask Ss what they have learnt about Captain Cook so far during this unit. Get them to tell each other in pairs first, and then get pairs to tell the rest of the class.
Homework
Read the passage again and complete the notes in Part 4.
Finish off the Workbook exercises.
