Check the homework exercises.
Brainstorm smoking. Ask Why do people smoke? What is bad about smoking? Why can‘t people give up? What did you learn about smoking from this unit? etc.
Step 2 Test
Dictation.
Books closed! Dictate the first paragraph of the passage in SB Page 10, Part 1.
Step 3 Preparation for listening
SB Page 12, Part 1. Wb Listening, Unit 2. Ex. 1. Go through the example and make sure the Ss know what to do. Note that, for this exercise, they only need to tick For or Against. They do not need to write down the reason yet.
Step 4 ListeningListening Cassette Lesson 8. Play the tape for Ex. 1, then let the Ss check their answers in pairs. Do Exx. 2 and 3 in the same way. Finally, discuss the answers with the whole class. Replay the tape to check the answers if necessary.

Six friends are having a discussion about smoking.

I don’t smoke a lot, just when I‘m studying. I think it helps me study better.
I don’t see what‘s wrong with smoking. I think people are wrong when they say that smoking is dangerous. My grandpa has smoked thirty cigarettes a day and he’s 83 years old.

I don‘t like people who smoke, their hair smells, their clothes smell, and when they smoke in your house the room smells of smoke for days.

I enjoy smoking. I like the taste of a cigarette after a meal. It’s a simple pleasure, that‘s all.

People think it’s clever to smoke, but I don‘t. It’s expensive, it‘s dirty and it’s not healthy.

My mother died from smoking. It was a terrible time. She was in hospital for two months and the doctors couldn‘t do anything to save her. I shall never smoke myself.

Step 5 Word study
SB Page 12, Part 2. Go through the words in the box and make sure the Ss know what they are going to do. Teach the new word club in Sentence 5. Get them to do this exercise individually. Then check the answers in pairs. Answers:

Step 6 Checkpoint
Go through Checkpoint 2. Revise Noun Clauses used as the Object and Predicative. Deal with any other language points that you or the Ss wish to raise.
Step 7 Writing
SB Page 12, Part 3. Groupwork. You may like to collect ideas on the Bb before the Ss start to work on their sentences. Go round the class and look at the sentences prepared by each group. Help the Ss with language points as necessary.
Step 8 Workbook
Wb Lesson 8, Exx. 1 - 4.
Do one sentence in Ex. 1 as an example. You may ask What kind of plant has leaves that are used for producing cigarettes? When the Ss know how to do the exercise, let them practise in pairs. Check the answers with the whole class.
Follow the same procedure with Exx. 2 and 3. It is better to translate the sentences into Chinese, making sure mat the Ss understand them. Ex. 4 practises using the Attributive Clause. The Ss may discuss the answers in pairs. Check the answers with the whole class. Write down the translation on the Bb.
Homework
Complete the Workbook exercises.
Do Ex. 4 as written work.
Start working on the poster (The Ss should be allowed a few days to make an attractive poster for display.)
