Step 1 Revision
1 Check the homework exercises.
2 Books closed! Revise the contents of the reading passage in SB Lesson 10, using Wb Lesson 10, Ex. 1 as a guide.
Step 2 Presentation
SB Page 16, Part 1. Tell the Ss Today we are going to read more about body language. How close do people stand when they are talking together? Is it good manners to stand very close to your friend like this? (Teach good/bad manners.) The distance between people who are talking is different in some countries. Let‘s read and find out. Give the Ss a short time to read the passage. Then collect the information from the class and write it in note form on the Bb.
Step 3 Reading
Ask more questions on the reading passage. Let the Ss read the passage and answer the questions, working in pairs or small groups. Check the answers with the whole class. Deal with any language points that arise.
Notes:
a quite a distance = quite a long way b stand closer = The distance between people is smaller.
c City people = people who live in cities d those = those people e will help communicate with people = You will have greater understanding with people.
Step 4 Language focus
Write on the Bb the sentence It is the custom in France to shake hands a lot. Point out the use of to in to shake. Remind the Ss that this is the infinitive form of the verb. Revise some uses of the to infinitive.
a Object: after verbs such as like, hope, want b Adverbial: (to express purpose) / went to Beijing to see my friend. c Subject: It’s nice to see you. d Attribute:(after a noun or pronoun) / have nothing to do. e Predicative: Waving one‘s hand is to say "goodbye". The question is when to start. f Object complement: They asked me to stand in line.
Step 5 Practice
SB Page 16, Part 2. Teach the new words guest, host, fist, truth and juice. Do one or two sentences orally in each part as an example, then let the Ss work in pairs, making up suitable sentences. Some suggested sentences:
Part 1
1 It’s a pleasure to see you again.
2 It is good manners to leave a party at the same time as the other guests.
3 It is polite to write to your host and say "Thank you".
4 It is my advice to wait in line.
5 It is bad manners to talk with your mouth full.
6 It is a good idea to learn the customs of your foreign friends.
7 It is necessary to do as the host does. Part 2
1 Waving one‘s hand is to say "Goodbye".
2 Shaking one’s fist is to show his anger.
3 Holding up one‘s head is to say "I’m not afraid".
4 Putting up one‘s hand is to say "Let me try".
5 Making a face is to show one’s pain perhaps. Part 3
1 Would you teach us how to drive a car?
2 I‘ll show you how to find the museum.
3 Let me tell you when and how to turn off the gas.
4 Do you know where to go and what to do now?
5 I wonder if you know how to find out the truth.
For Part 3, there are many alternatives. Try to let the Ss make as many sentences as they can.
Step 6 Practice
SB Page 17, Part 3. Go through the example. Teach the new word juice. Let the Ss work in pairs. At the end of this activity ask some pairs to act out in front of the class. Suggested dialogues:
A: Would you like something to drink?
B: Yes, apple juice, please.
A: Sorry I’ve got nothing to offer you.
B: It doesn‘t matter. A: Have you got any more to say?
B: No, thanks.
A: Are you free tomorrow?
B: No, I’ve a lot to do.
A: Have you got everything ready for the conference?
B: Yes. There‘s nothing to worry about.
Step 7 Discussion
SB Page 17, Part 4. Take it up in class if you have time. Ask the Ss to list out all the body language they have learned and write them on the Bb. Then let the Ss work in pairs and discuss what the body language will help to do.
Step 8 Workbook
Wb Lesson 11,Exx. 1-3.
Make sure the Ss have a full understanding of the reading passages before starting to do Ex. 1. Let the Ss discuss the answers in pairs. Then check the answers with the whole class. The Ss should read out the whole passage. It is better to have the answers written on the Bb.
Do Ex. 2 orally in class.
If time permits, do Ex. 3 in class. Encourage the Ss to think of different answers.
Homework
Finish the Workbook exercises. Revise the contents in this unit. Do Ex. 3 if it is possible.
