Step 1 Revision
1 Check the homework exercises.
2 Find out how much the Ss know about western food. Ask Ss What kind of food do people eat in the west? Tell me the words for some western food. Write on the Bb the vocabulary which Ss suggest, particularly new language items for this lesson. Translate into Chinese as you do this. Offer suggestions yourself, and make sure that you teach all the new food items in the dialogue in this step.
Step 2 Presentation
SB Page 19, Part 1. Books shut. Read the introduction aloud and check that the Ss are expecting three speakers in the dialogue.
Step 3 Listening
Say Now listen to the dialogue and find out the answer to this question: What are Wang Bing ‘s plans for the future? Play the tape once or twice as necessary and check the answer. (He’s going to start work at the Farm Institute next month.)
Step 4 Dialogue
Speech Cassette Lesson 13. Books open. Play the tape of the dialogue for the Ss to listen and follow. Go through the dialogue briefly and make sure the Ss understand it. Explain the ellipsis: Anything to follow? (= Would you like anything to follow? ) Play the tape again. This time the Ss listen and repeat, paying particular attention to intonation. Then let the Ss practise the dialogue in pairs. You may wish to ask three Ss to act the scene in front of the class.
Notes:
a Yes, I sure am. = Yes, I‘m very hungry.
b went without breakfast = didn’t have breakfast.
Point out that it is possible to go without a meal, even while staying in the same place.
c Right now I could eat an ox: An expression =
I‘m so hungry now that I could eat a whole ox (a similar expression: eat a horse).
d take your order = write down which food you want and pass it to the kitchen e I’m looking forward to that: a set expression for anticipating a pleasant event in the future f All the same: an expression of contrast. Even though you will be quite a long way from your friends, I expect you‘ll enjoy coming into town. g now and again = from time to time
Step 5 Practice
SB Page 19, Part 2. Check the items on the right -hand side. Point out that you say a potato salad in a cafe/restaurant, because you are talking about a portion of potato salad. However, at someone’s house, you would say some potato salad because there would probably be a large bowl of it. Similarly, you would say some chicken soup at a friend‘s house. Explain that the phrases on the left are suitable for a situation in a friend’s home, and then do a repetition drill (books shut) with the phrases on the left, paying particular attention to polite intonation. Put the students in groups of four to practise the phrases and foods with each other (2 hosts and 2 guests). Join a good group to demonstrate to the class how to do this.
Step 6 Workbook
Wb Lesson 13, Exx. 1-3.
To do Ex. 1, the Ss have to re-read the dialogue. Let them practise in pairs first. Then check the answers with the whole class. You may call out some pairs of Ss to give their performance, or you may ask them the questions at a quick pace. Ex. 2 should be done in class. Allow the Ss some moments to go through the whole passage so that they can decide what words they should fill in the blanks with. Then ask several Ss to read aloud the complete passage. This can be used as a model for retelling the story.
Ex. 3 helps Ss revise the phrases in Part 2 of SB Page 19. The exercise can be done in Step 5 before Ss make up their own dialogues. It can also be done now as part of consolidation. If possible, get groups of students to act out their conversations without their books in front of the class.
