The Digraphs ei and ie

　　在许多英语单词中e和i是出现在一起的。当两个字母都发音时，拼写容易记住，如：diet, deity,

happier。 在部分单词中，ei发长音[ei]，这些单词也非常易记，因它们总是ei组合在一起，如：eight,

weight, feign, neighbor, etc. 但大部分情况下ie和ei是digraph，两个字母中一个发声而另一个不发声。

当e不发声时，它们发i的长音和短音：

　　　die (长), sieve (短)；当i不发声时，它们发e的长音和短音：either (长), friend (短)。 　

　　 ie

　　1. 大多数单词中ie读e的长音[i:] yield, siege, believe

　　2. 仅仅在有三个字母组成的单词中ie读i的长音[ai] lie die

　　3. 当ie在字母r之前时(ier)，读i的短音[i] frontier, cashier, fierce

ei

　　1. 在部分单词中ei读i的长音[ai] height sleight

　　2. 在外来词和以[fit]音结尾的单词中，i读的短音[i] counterfeit, surfeit, forfeit

　　3. ei在下列单词中读[i:] caffeine, seize, leisure, either, ceiling, neither

　　4. ei在字母组合ceive中发e的长音[i:] deceive conceive perceive receive deceit conceit receipt

在以y结尾的单词中，当加上ed, er, es或est后，y变i成为ie，但此时的读音依赖于y在原单词中的读音：

　　 satisfy + ed = satisfied marry + es = marries 另外，当加er或est时，两个字母均读音：merrier,

happiest

　　Here are some ways of remembering a few commonly misspelled words. seize means to capture

and hold. It begins with the letters as sees. weird can be remembered as we·ird, although it is

a one-syllable word. fiery comes from fire, but it has three syllables: fi·er·y. Both the i

and e are pronounced. mischief contains the word chief, although it has the short i sound

instead of the long e sound.
